BASI LFTL Australia 2020

BASI LFTL AU 2020

A BASI Graduate’s first visit to LFTL 19

Q&A with a BASI LFTL 19 Attendee, Amber Monk

Amber completed the Global Comprehensive Program at Sydney Host studio, Dynamic Pilates in 2017 and the Learn from the Leaders, 2019 Newport was her first LFTL experience. These are her words…

Q. Which workshops and classes did you attend? Any favourites and why?

I attended Brett Howard’s ‘Spinal and trunk Abnormalities’ on the first day.  Coming from a classical background and training under Romana, I was in awe of his knowledge of how to work with different conditions . He was also a great presenter, relaxed and funny.

On the following day, I did another of his workshops on ‘The right touch in Pilates’. Learning an abundance of new cues for a large amount of our BASI repertoire. Practical modifications for different body types, and also teaching the same exercise on different equipment, or just with yourself as the assist.

I also loved Karen Clippinger’s workshop on ‘Hollowing and Bracing’, I was lucky enough to demonstrate an exercise in her workshop which gave me the brief but happy experience of working with her. Coming from a dance background I felt like I was back in Ballet class, and the grace and ease with which Karen demonstrated such challenging exercises I was in awe of.

Theo Botha’s class I loved to! Her energy was just what we needed and her progressions were fun and new! Can’t wait to see her in Australia.

Q. What was it like to meet other BASI Pilates instructors/faculty from around the world?

Amazing! All were so warm and friendly

Q. There is a lot of talk about the BASI family, did you experience this feeling at LFTL?

Absolutely, even in the short time since graduating we have made friendships with other graduates and Host studios from all over the world, and look forward to meeting up at other BASI events.

Q. As a recently certified BASI instructor, what was the best thing for you about the LFTL event?

There were so many great moments from LFTL , the quality of the workshops were fantastic, each one we learnt so much from and I cannot wait to put what we have learnt into practice with my clients in the studio. As well as taking a mat class with Rael , there was also the opportunity to do workshops with him, and this was an absolute highlight…getting to see the depth of his knowledge and his ability to see the strength and weaknesses of the body in front of him, evident in years of experience in teaching.

Getting to see our own BASI Australia faculty Ed, Jordanna and Shane demonstrating exercises, presenting workshops and even participating in workshops alongside them was pretty cool to see just quietly. Speaking with other BASI graduates from around the globe at the conference made us appreciate even more how spoilt we are getting to train with faculty every week!

I would definitely recommend LFTL for other BASI graduates.

Q. Did you attend any post conference events or visit BASI HQ?

Sonya Rawlinson and I had booked a semi private session at BASI HQ the day we arrived, having not slept on the flight I was not sure I could even do it, but it turned out to be a great session with Yurika Matsomoto.

BASI HQ is a bright and warm studio.

Q. Did you get to do any Pilates with Rael? What was it like to hear from or train with the founder of BASI Pilates?

One of the moments that will stick with me forever is doing a mat class with Rael at the end of the LFTL conference. We were all exhausted, a combination of full days of workshops, early classes, late nights, and jetlag… and we knew we still had an hour and a half of mat work with Rael. But there was an energy in the room, 300 people packed into this conference room all with our BASI mats laid inches apart. I remember it was hot and noisy, I was next to BASI faculty Sheri Long, with Jordanna in front of me, when Rael begun the session all you could see was a room full of people moving in unison and all you could hear was everyone breathing in unison, a room full of people who knew the repertoire so well.

Rael was tired, everyone was, but his enthusiasm and energy was clear.

“Body we’ve got this, Mind we’ve got this” he said at our tenth attempt at hip circles. Amazing!

Q. LFTL is coming to Australia next year. Will you be there?

Absolutely! I am sure it will be amazing!

BASI LFTL Australia 2020 will be held at the Mantra Legends, Gold Coast on 24th & 25th October 2020. Tickets on sale from 31st October 2019.
